Look, I appreciate the criticism GoT receives, I really do, but…
This idea that a Mad Queen!Dany storyline would not be as offensive, if it were better written; this notion that a Mad Queen!Dany storyline makes sense for book!Dany; this insistence that Dany will 100% lose her sanity in the books, because D&D Did It…
Pisses me off. No, in 2k19, a trope as sexist as the “hysterical/mad woman who can’t handle power and can’t handle loss without becoming an psycho bitch” is not innovative, is not wanted, is not what we need right now. Even if Martin wins a goddamn Nobel Prize for writing Dany’s descent into madness, I won’t immediately like and accept such an ending for a character who’s been a source of comfort and strength for girls and women all around the world. I’m willing to give Martin the benefit of the doubt, since I don’t believe he’ll go there anyways, BUT I find it… Hurtful, annoying, and kind of shameful that such a large part of the fandom seems to be OK with Mad Queen!Dany, only if it were written better.
I’m not OK with that and I never will. A female character should be able to be ruthless without being perceived as mad. A female character should be allowed to make mistakes and overcome them without being condemned to die at her lover’s hands. The Mad Queen!Dany theory is a harmful interpretation of the source material that invalidates a female character’s arc, because it is eDgY.
Simply put, a better development of Dany’s madness doesn’t make it a good thing and I don’t know why people aren’t being more critical about the possible implications of a trope that has been used for ages to discredit and discriminate against women for being emotional and having flaws.
In short: the Mad Queen!Dany scenario can suck my entire ass.
Especially since Dany is such a groundbreaking female character in power. I can name lots of stories with queens involved in politics and learning how to maneuver their way through perilous courts, but I can hardly name any whose power depends on herself and not the emperor/king/lord’s fondness of her like Dany. I also can’t name many female characters who are learning to handle both feminine power (politics and such like the Meereen arc) and masculine power (dragons, armies) like Dany. Not to mention, despite the strict, misogynistic societal expectations of women, Dany pursues her relationship with Daario and is a sexually free woman (although her age does make me uncomfortable sometimes). She’s an amazing character that you won’t find often in fantasy settings, where women have such restrictive expectations. And turning such a great character into just another sexist trope of a hysterical, crazed woman who couldn’t handle the pressure of her power is fucking gross. I don’t care how beautifully Martin writes a “madness” arc for her, I won’t be happy about it.
And even if Dany is not “mad” and is just evil, it’s still sexist. Having both of the main female rulers in the story (Dany and Cersei) as evil while the male rulers are good sends the message that only men can wield power, that women are “corrupted” with it. It’s even worse when we consider that both Dany and Cersei are not “pure and virginal”, they have sex for pleasure and outside of marriage, and women were always vilified for this (especially women in power). Having both Dany and Cersei as evil is like saying that only virginal women can avoid being corrupted by power. No matter how well written this could have been, it’s sexist, we don’t need more of that.
Sfhshdjshd
The male rulers preceding dany and cersei were joffrey who was a shit king, Robert who was a shit king and aerys who was a shit king. Maybe the story is trying to make a case for whoever touches the iron throne will ultimately be miserable despite all that power and i actually do really despise dany’s mad queen storyline but y'all are actually pulling some weird shit out of thin air to criticise the story
This is an interesting story because people my parents age are like “How dare he” and people my age are like “oh same”
What’s even more interesting is he’s not serious. In India there’s a culture of intense deference to parents. He believes that this is a very unhealthy way for people to live and so he’s using this court case as a way to tell people that the idea of “you must grovel in gratitude to your parents because they brought you into the world and fed and clothed you” is a bad thing and that parents have to feed and clothe you because it’s their damn job and they chose to have you.
He really gets on with his own parents and his mother has publicly voiced her support for him.
Tl;dr: This isn’t incel bullshit like the dude who’s parents evicted him last year, this is a political protest to unhealthy expectations parents have for their children even though he isn’t pressured into those expectations by his own parents.
i just discovered a youtube channel that does entirely live action remakes of spongebob episodes to get around the fact that you cant post the actual episodes
and theres actually a lot of effort put into this?????
